Problem with SyntaxHighlighter Evolved in WordPress MU 2.7.1

I installed SyntaxHighlighter Evolved a couple of days ago but I wasn’t sure how to use, I couldn’t get it to work. After a while I saw the following error message “Warning: htmlspecialchars_decode() expects parameter 1 to be string”. After a quick Googling for that phrase I found this post that led me to the the following bug report with the solution.

The line in error is line 104 in wp-includes/compat.php:

if ( !is_scalar( $string ) ) {

should be

if ( !is_scalar( $str ) ) {

I did the change and now it works perfect. 🙂

WordPress is updated to the latest version

Hi folks

I have updated this blog server to the latest version (wordpress mu 2.7.1). It all went well and this time I decided to use the wordpress built in updater. First I did a full backup of all folders and the wordpress database (just in case ;-)). Then all I had to do was to press the update button. Done!!! I’m impressed, kudos to all you wordpress developers.

I also updated all plugins that was installed except for the LightBox 2 plugin. I can’t get that to work in 2.7+ version of wordpress. I tried to install the 2.0.2 version but it didn’t work so I had to downgrade to 1.8.2.

I installed the SyntaxHighlighter Evolved plugin and OpenID plugin. SyntaxHighlighter Evolved allows you to easily post syntax-highlighted code to your site without loosing it’s formatting or making any manual changes. It uses the SyntaxHighlighter JavaScript. The OpenID plugin allows users to login to their local WordPress account using an OpenID, as well as enabling commenters to leave authenticated comments with OpenID. I promise to write more about OpenId and how to use it.

thats all, see ya

HĂ€r hĂ€nder det grejer……

Hallo allihopa, Peter is back 😉

Time to upgrade WordPress MU 1.2.5

A few days ago I upgraded my WordPress MU installation. It all went smoothly with no problems at all. Thank you guys at WordPress for doing such a great software.

I’m hosting my site at Lunarpages and since it is a shared server you can’t use ssh, so I had to use FTP and cPanel when upgrading.

Ok, this is how I upgraded wpmu from 1.2.5 to 1.3.

  1. I know that this step isn’t always my first choice but I thought that I would try it anyway, RTFM.
    Read the upgrade guide at WordPress and the extended version to.
  2. Make a backup of the installation, the wpmu folder (public_html/blogs) and the database (wpmu).
  3. I decided to upgrade a copy of my wordpress installation folder so I could easily switch to that when it was time.
    Copy the blogs folder to wpmu13
  4. Download the tar file from WordPress MU
    and save it on your desktop or server (in my case it was the desktop).
  5. Extract the tar file.
  6. Ok this was the part when I had to focus. According to the upgrade guide I should delete the old WordPress files but DO NOT DELETE everything. Since I’m upgrading a copy of the WordPress folder I wasn’t so nervous. I used a ftp klient when deleting them, just select everything and then unselect those files that shouldn’t be deleted. And yes, it is in the wpmu13 folder I’m deleting files
  7. Now upload the WordPress MU folder that you have download and extracted in the previous step. If files already exists, just replace them. Don’t worry, remember this is just a copy of the original folder. Yes, it’s still the wpmu13 folder.
  8. Now it’s time to do the real upgrade step. Make sure no one is using the blog, then rename the original blogs folder to wpmu125
  9. Rename the upgraded folder from wpmu13 to blogs.
  10. Point your browser to http://<your-domain>/wp-admin/upgrade.php to start the upgrade of the database.
  11. Done!!

Installing WordPress MU on Lunarpages

I wanted to install a blogging software that everyone in the family could use. Lunarpages has the Fantastico package that contains the WordPress software. Unfortunately this is the single -user version of WordPress and I wanted each and every family member to have their own blog e.g.<name>.

This how I did it.

  1. Create a subdomain named blogs (
  2. Create database wpmu
  3. Create db user wpmu and add the user to the database
  4. Download the wpmu tar file and extract it on the desktop
  5. Now upload the exploded tar file to the root directory of the newly created subdomain named blogs (/www/blogs/)
  6. Run the WordPress MU installation script by accessing
  7. Select subdirectories.
  8. Done

You might also want to restrict blog signups.

  1. Log in as admin
  2. Select Site admin|options and restrict domain email and use
  3. or you can edit the wp-signup.php instead to only allow admin to add a new blog. Just add the following lines after get_header in wp-signup.php.
    if( is_user_logged_in() == false xor is_site_admin() == false ) {
    die( __('Sorry we are not accepting new bloggers at this time. If you already have an account - but no administrator rights - you are unable to create new blogs as well.') );
    for more info..
